What is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period?

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is a window of time that happens every year from Oct. 15 until Dec. 7 and gives people who already have Medicare the opportunity to switch to a new plan or make changes to their existing plan. Those changes would take effect Jan. 1 of the following year.

It's important to know that the Annual Enrollment Period is an opportunity, not an obligation. If you have a plan and you're satisfied with it, your plan can renew automatically.
