Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is a window of time that happens every year from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. During AEP, individuals currently on Medicare can switch to a new plan or make changes to their existing coverage. Any plan changes take effect on Jan. 1 of the following year.

It's important to know that the Annual Enrollment Period is an opportunity, not an obligation. If you have a Medicare plan and you're satisfied with it, your plan will renew automatically.

• Switch from a Medicare Supplement plan to a Medicare Advantage plan
• Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
• Join, switch, or drop a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan
• Change from Original Medicare (Parts A & B) to a Medicare Advantage plan with or without built-in drug coverage
